Probate is the court process which gives an Executor the authority to act for a deceased person's estate. The Executor must have this court authority to transfer the deceased person's bank accounts, brokerage accounts, real estate titles, and other assets to the proper beneficiaries. Probate is the proceeding when the deceased person dies with a will. Similar court procedures exist when the deceased person had no will (estate administration) and where the deceased person died with property in multiple jurisdictions (ancillary probate).
